It is often said, one can judge a book by its cover. After years of experience and work, I feel this might not be the case. Many things are not what they look or seem to be. There is always much more underneath and beyond what we see or can perceive. The experience is altogether different. This holds true for travelers and travelling. The world has so much to offer and there is so much to see. What one person likes or dislikes, others might not feel the same way about it. One such undermined place is Utah.

Not Everything You Hear is True

People often refrain from Utah travels or vacation trip as they are misled due to its dry terrain and deserts. Utah is a place that holds in its lap many marvels for the enthusiastic and fun traveler. A traveler who is willing to explore, tread the road less taken and have an adventure should definitely have this place on his list. A tourist can go to many places and enjoy many activities from just relaxing in the lap of nature to going out for dirt bike rides with like-minded people.

There are many resorts and places to stay that offer spectacular views of the city and are well connected to the places around for one to explore and see. The travelers can contact the local tourist guides for packages or details for all outbound activity. Below is a small list, not conclusive, of activities and things one can do in Utah and plan to visit the upcoming 2013 Utah Events. The information for all these events that happen is easily and readily available online for people to see and plan their vacations accordingly.

  • Raft for the Cure
  • The Lord Of The Wings, at the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site
  • Sunday Love Feast, featuring live events, demonstrations and exotic foods
  • OktoberFest at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort
  • Go around the city in a hot air balloon for once in a lifetime experience, year round (weather permitting).

Utah organizes several fairs, festivals and hosts many important events year round and these local festivals are well worth a visit. One can plan vacations according to the event they want to attend and get to experience the life of Utah in its full fervor. Apart from this, you can always plan for other outbound adventure activities and places to see depending on the time and season of the year.

Among the numerous activities that can be found while visiting Southern Utah, the following is the top ten that tourists and residents enjoy here.

1.)    Go fishing- From rivers and lakes to reservoirs and streams, Southern Utah is a great place to do a little fishing. If bass is your fish of choice, one of the nation’s best places to catch bass and striped bass is Lake Powell, located on the border of Utah and Arizona. Other lakes and streams in the area are known for rainbow and brown trout, in addition to many other types of fish.

2.)    Take a scenic drive- With so many plateaus, canyons, and cliffs, there is no shortage of picturesque drives where every route is the scenic route. One of the most popular routes is to Cedar Mountain Plateau where visitors can experience a 360 degree view of diverse landscapes and terrain.

3.)    Visit a National Park- Southern Utah boasts some of the best national and state parks in our nation. The unique and ancient geographical features make visits to any one of the five major national parks an experience to remember. The five major national parks are:  Bryce Canyon National Park, Canyonlands National Park (Island in the Sky District), Canyonlands National Park (Needles District), Capitol Reef National Park , and Zion National Park.

4.)    Take a hike – Some of the best hiking trails in the world can be found in Red Rock country. Whether you are an advanced hiker or just a beginner, Southern Utah offers an experience for anyone. Almost all of the national and state parks have multiple hiking trails to explore, and each one offers a different scene with varying levels of difficulties. A popular hiking trail located in Zion National Park is the narrows. This path is great for beginners but also advanced hikers who want to continue on to the Gorge for a 16 mile hike around the top.

5.)    Experience the local art – Interested in the arts? The city of St. George is perfect for every art enthusiast. From art museums to multiple exhibitions and shows around town, there is something for everyone’s taste in art and culture.

6.)    Find a great biking trail – Similar to the hiking trails, most of the national and state parks have multiple bike trails for varying levels of difficulty. Depending on the type of terrain you prefer, you can find great trails at Zion National Park, Grand Staircase Escalante, and Cedar Breaks, to name a few.

7.)    Play some golf- Numerous golf resorts span the landscape of Southern Utah, but St. George’s Red Rock Golf Trail is one of the most picturesque and unique locations to play golf. Golfers can experience any one of the 13 golf courses that are available year round.

8.)    Experience the city of St. George- Awarded one of America’s best “Wilderness Town,” St. George offers great dining and entertainment, against the background of canyons and mountains.

9.)    Visit a ghost town- Southern Utah is home to Grafton Ghost Town where “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” was filmed. Visit this town near Zion National Park to experience the true American West.

10.)  Hop in a hot air balloon- There is no better way to experience the natural beauty and geographical wonders of Southern Utah than in a hot air balloon. In a balloon hundreds of feet off of the ground, you will see rock formations in a way that is not possible from the ground or in an air plane. Most balloon rides will take you over one of many national state parks as well as other unique geographical locations such as the Gorge and portions of the Moab.

Not the outdoorsy type? No problem! St. George offers great shopping, entertainment, dining, and museums. Spend a day in the city touring art galleries and exhibitions and spend your evening enjoying a concert in the park. Grab a blanket, food, and family and enjoy a summer night full of music and fun. Concerts run from May 13th to September 9th and begin every night at 7:30 pm.

Are you a festival goer? Well, even if you aren’t, this is definitely one you’ll still want to check out.

St. George Art Festival

The St. George Art Festival has been around since 1980 and is put on by the beautiful city of St. George, Utah. It actually originated as a festival for local artisans, but has since grown into much more than that. With the expansion of the St. George Art Festival, due to the appeal from both the artists and the festival attendees, it now has a committee select just over 110 artist applications from all over the United States to participate in this fun event that is held annually on Easter weekend. Be sure to start planning your St. George vacation getaway so you don’t miss out on being part of this wonderful event.

If in attendance, you can expect to see beautiful original works of art from extremely talented artists, live entertainment from musicians and dancers, a wide variety of food choices, and a children’s play area so they can get all the wiggles out. Let’s not forget that the festival is located in historic downtown St. George at the Town Square which includes the water features, fountains, a small river, flower gardens, a splash pad, and the carousel of course.
