Another fun rite of spring in St. George is Skywest Airlines popular and exciting Mini-Indy, an amped up go-cart race featuring custom paint jobs, fancy uniforms and some darned exciting driving at the old St. George Airport. This year’s annual event is great fun for spectators, serious business for Skywest employees and vendors, many who come from around the US – and as far away as Brazil – to participate; and, provides support for United Way Dixie in their efforts to award much-needed funding to local non-profit organizations. 2016 marks the 16th anniversary of Mini Indy in southern Utah, and while much has changed over the years, one thing remains the same: the competition is as fierce as ever with returning champions aiming to hold off the pack and keep their titles!
More than 30 teams with custom karts, speedy pit crews and eager drivers will be found zooming around the “Ridgetop Raceway” on the beautiful spring morning of Friday, March 18, 2016, with the winners claiming trophies as heat placers as well as the top three overall racers and prizes in such categories as “best paint job,” “fastest pit crew,” “best team uniforms,” “best theme” and more.
Since 2000, the eagerly anticipated Mini-Indy has raised nearly $1 million for United Way Dixie, which then distributes funds to approximately 15 non-profit agencies here in Washington County through a rigorous grant application process.
The event kicks off with the arrival of the American flag at 9:45 a.m. when a skydiver drops from the sky. The race begins at 10 a.m.
