Big River at Shakespeare
With the wide Mississippi as the backdrop, the irrepressible Huck Finn comes to life on the Utah Shakespeare Festival’s Randall L. Jones Theater stage on alternating nights from June 30 to September 1. The adventures of Huck and his friend Jim, a slave trying to escape to freedom, are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming based on Mark Twain’s classic 1884 novel.
The Big River screenplay by William Hauptman is set to bluegrass and country-style music and lyrics by Roger Miller. The 1985 Tony Award winner for Best Musical and Best Musical Score, Big River is just that – a story which is vast, energetic and moving in its telling of friendship and determination. Long after the curtain comes down on what is considered one of only a handful of highly successful American musicals, you’ll be humming tunes such as “River in the Rain,” “Worlds Apart,” and the rousing anthem “Free at Last,” all the way home to your vacation home-away-from-home in St. George.
